Elektroncek Living Greener

19.04.2010

After several months of preparation the Elektroncek Group joined one of the biggest cleaning projects in Slovenia called “Let’s clean Slovenia in one day”.  The cleanup took place on Saturday, 17th of April in Menges, which was one of the 210 participating communities and is the town where Elektroncek’s head office and manufacturing are located.

The clean up story started a long time ago in 1989, when Australian builder and solo yachtsman, Ian Kiernan came up with simple idea to clean up his own backyard – Sydney Harbour. His idea soon attracted people all over Australia and almost 300.000 volunteers turned out on the first Clean Up Australia Day. After gaining the support from the people of Australia, the project was supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which extended the environmentally friendly campaign to many countries around the world.

The effort, commitment and results in Slovenia last Saturday were impressive.  The clean up project received an enormous public response with 10 percent of the Slovenian population participating, in total about 250,000 volunteers, and according to recent data, the participants disposed of 60,000 cubic meters of collected waste.

Volunteers from Elektroncek and subsidiary company Kongo Hotel & Casino joined other volunteers at the collection point in the Sports Park Topole in Menges, where they were equipped with gloves, bags and all other necessary instructions on how to sort waste. They cleaned mostly by the stream Pšata, where accumulated wastes such as tires, engine and car  parts, plastic and much more was removed.

The Elektroncek Group is aware of our environmental responsibilities, and we are proud to have helped to write a positive line in the history of Slovenia. The environment in our home town community of Menges, is important to us and we are proud to have contributed and to have helped raise growing awareness of the protection of nature and the importance of sustainable development.

We wish the project organizers great success in the future in their efforts to protect the environment and to make Slovenia a better, cleaner place to live.
